The 2014 Grande Reserva Malbec is sourced from two dry-farmed vineyards in Maule, one of them the Constanza Vineyard they also bottle separately. The destemmed grapes fermented in cement vats with indigenous yeasts. After fermenting, half of the wine was put into 225-liter French oak barrels and the other half into 600-liter barrels to diminish the effect of the oak in the wine, which matured for nine months before bottling unfiltered in August 2015. This elevage is designed to provide the pure expression of the variety and the terroir. The nose was really singing with all the telltale Malbec aromas, flowers (violets), wild raspberries, a touch of sweet spices and a lactic hint denoting youth with some echoes of toffee that will get integrated with a little bit of time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied, with a terse texture, great vivacity and acidity, with the characteristic granitic minerality and some grainy tannins that would also welcome some polishing in bottle and/or some food. This is great value and a perfect example of what Malbec can deliver in Maule. 34,000 bottles produced.

Varietal: Malbec

Malbec grapes have been grown for centuries in the Old World, and whilst many wineries had and continue to have great success with these dark and rather demanding grapes, they are famously susceptible to rot and quickly lose their best features should the weather not be as good as they need it to be. As such, it is the New World Malbec wines which have really made this old and respected varietal a household name, and the many single variety bottles we see in our supermarkets and wine stores bearing this grape have been some of the biggest and most pleasing success stories of recent years. However, Malbec is often and was traditionally used as a blending grape, offering its strong tannins and heavy, plummy fruit flavors to milder, mellower wines to boost their character, and many of these blended wines rank amongst the finest in the world. As such, Malbec is a highly versatile grape which has spread across the globe to produce some very different results, each one pleasing, and each one packed with flavor and character.

Region: Valle Central

Chile's Valle Central has to be one of the oldest 'New World' wine regions on earth, with a viticultural history which stretches all the way back to the 16th century, and the time of the first European settlers in South America. This long stretch of valleys and mountains, which extends between Maipo and Maule, has grown to become one of the most prodigious and productive wine regions on the continent, with a reputation for big, flavourful and characterful wines. Chile has a long and rich wine history which dates back to the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century, who were the first to discover that the wonderful climate and fertile soils of this South American country were ideal for vine cultivation. It has only been in the past forty or fifty years, however, that Chile as a modern wine producing nation has really had an impact on the rest of the world. Generally relatively cheap in price,Whilst being widely regarded as definitively 'New World' as a wine producing country, Chile has actually been cultivating grapevines for wine production for over five hundred years. The Iberian conquistadors first introduced vines to Chile with which to make sacramental wines, and although these were considerably different in everything from flavor, aroma and character to the wines we associate with Chile today, the country has a long and interesting heritage when it comes to this drink. Chilean wine production as we know it first arose in the country in the mid to late 19th century, when wealthy landowners and industrialists first began planting vineyards as a way of adopting some European class and style. They quickly discovered that the hot climate, sloping mountainsides and oceanic winds provided a perfect terroir for quality wines, and many of these original estates remain today in all their grandeur and beauty, still producing the wines which made the country famous.
