Additional Information on Ben Ami Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery: Ben Ami

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever. Their sharp and astringent nature has a wonderful ability to mellow and round with age, and when helped by being blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc varietals – as is done in Bordeaux and elsewhere – the results can be truly remarkable. What is most special about Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is the fact that they have a true affinity for oak, and when aged in barrels made of this fragrant wood, the wine which comes out of them a few years later holds an amazing array of flavors and aromas, making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines some of the most memorable in the world. Single variety bottles from the New World made from this grape are also increasing in popularity, as the strong flavors and full-bodied nature of these wines is a great match for many global cuisines.

Region: Galilee

The beautiful Israeli region of Galilee is one of the most famous sites in the world when it comes to cultural and religious history, and yet the wines of this dry and arid region are yet to really make a big impact on the wine stores of the western world. However, the high quality of the produce being made in the region could change all this, as the past few years have been exceptionally good for vintners in Galilee, with a wide range of imported French grape varietals having flourished in the vineyards around the fertile base of Mount Tabor. Perhaps surprisingly, given the difference in climatic conditions, Bordeaux grapes make up for most of the varietals planted in Galilee, and Sémillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot can be found growing extremely well all over the region. Helped by the volcanic basalt soils, these grapes produce wonderfully characterful and flavorful wines, enjoyed by kosher observing Jewish communities and others all over the world.

Country: Israel

For thousands of years now, Israel has been an important country when it comes to wine production. Today, wineries across Israel are having great success with the imported French varietals which have proven to be a fine match for the climate and soil types across the country, and grapes such as Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc make up for the vast majority of varietals grown on Israeli soil. Israel enjoys a Mediterranean climate in many parts of the country, and even more desert-type regions such as the Negev are proving to be ideal locations for viticulture, thanks to a combination of traditional and modern techniques, and advanced irrigation methods. Israeli wines are almost always made to kosher requirements, and as such have a high demand all over the world by Jewish communities, as well as being popular with many other people due to their quality and characteristics.
