France’s Rhone Valley is rightly regarded as one of the world’s finest wine regions, combining over two thousand years of continuous viticultural practices with flawless terroir, and a set of wineries and winemakers who have a passion and reverence for their craft which is almost unrivalled anywhere else on earth. It is in this beautiful part of France we find the historic estate of Chateau du Trignon, a stunning and quintessentially Rhone Valley-style winery, which is steadily maintaining its reputation as one of the best the region has to offer. The estate was bought in the late 19th century by the esteemed vintner, Joseph Roux, and the winery remained with his descendents until 2007, when it passed into the hands of Jerome Quiot, an equally passionate winemaker with a history of successes in Chateauneuf du Pape and Provence.

Jerome Quiot set about expanding the operation, and widening its reach in order to obtain grapes which could be blended to make wines of extreme elegance, length and character. Today, the winery uses grapes which come from 150 acres of high quality, aged vines in five villages: Rasteau, Sablet, Gigondas, Beaumes de Venise and Vacqueyras. Low yielding vines are the key to the winery’s success, along with the region’s beautifully gentle climatic conditions, and a range of soils and elevations which provide fruit of varying characters and features, ideal for blending together.

Most of Chateau du Trignon wines are typical of the region: deep and complex red wines, made from a carefully balanced blend of the area’s key grape varietals. Their Cotes du Rhone blend brings together the best Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre varietal grapes in order to produce a set of wines which are highly drinkable, yet complicated and endlessly interesting, and the winery also produces fantastic examples of Marsanne and Roussanne wines, all of which express plenty of the mineral rich limestone and clay soils. White grapes are also grown here, too, including the beautifully aromatic Viognier varietal and the fascinating Muscat Beaumes de Venise.
