Moving to the classic cuvee and even more impressive (it was one of the top wines I was able to taste for this report), the 2010 Bandol, which is over 90% Mourvedre, sees partial destemming and aging in oak casks, offers both gorgeous aromatic complexity and superb richness and depth on the palate. Giving up notions of pepper, Provencal herbs, underbrush and leather, with a solid core of dark fruit, this medium to full-bodied, pure, layered and beautifully balanced effort needs another 2-3 years of bottle age, and will easily keep for a decade or more past that.

Vintage: 2010

2010 saw extremely high quality viticulture in many parts of the world, with an exceptionally long and hot summer providing huge benefits for wineries across many countries, especially in the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere and Europe saw something of a cooler summer and flowering period, but this was by no means as disastrous as it could have been. France, especially, had a fantastic year in 2010, with the world renowned Burgundy region proclaiming that their white wines of this year are ones to look out for, and despite yields being relatively small across much of the country, the quality was exceptionally high. Spain, too, received some cooler weather, but Rioja and the rest of central Spain are hailing 2010 as a very good year indeed, again as a result of smaller, finer yields. California also received similar climatic conditions, but again, wineries are highly positive about the overall effect this had on their produce, as the slightly challenging conditions resulted in smaller yields of much elegance and distinction. 2010 was really Australia's year, and in South Australia and across the Mornington Peninsula, Chardonnay vines produced good yields with a lower sugar level than in previous years. As such, the majority of South Australian white wines from 2010 are superb, and packed full of character. Shiraz also had a great year, and most Australian wineries have been proclaiming 2010 one of the great vintages. Both the Argentinian and Chilean wine industries benefited from some ideal climatic conditions this year, and are reportedly ecstatically pleased with the fact that their 2010 wines ended up with lower alcohol levels, and were beautifully balanced wines packed full of flavor.

Varietal: Mourvedre

In many parts of the world, from Washington State to France, Australia to Spain, wineries have been working with the Mourvèdre varietal grape to achieve fantastic and fascinating results. The grape varietal is actually a relatively ancient one, believed to have been brought to Spain from Asia Minor over two thousand years ago. The Mourvèdre grape is generally considered to be a difficult one to cultivate, as it requires both heat, light and moisture, meaning wineries wishing to grow Mourvèdre need to be well irrigated, but in hot regions where the vines will be safe from rot. The grapes hold lots of unusual and interesting flavors, ranging from meaty and gamey, to brambly and full of dark fruit notes. As such, the wines they produce can be matched with lots of different foods, making them popular around the world.

There are few places in the world quite as evocative as Provence, and this relatively small wine region of France has become something of a world leader following centuries of high esteem and ongoing solid, reliable production of truly excellent, characterful wines. The wines from Provence are primarily rosé, made from red wine grape juices allowed a limited time in which to have contact with their skins and seeds, and are generally considered to be amongst the finest rosé wines on earth. Provence also produces big, spicy red wines, and extremely delicate, dry, crisp white wines, too. For thousands of years, the beautiful Mediterranean climate of the region has proven itself to be ideal for viticulture, and the wine industry of Provence remains as strong and consistently superb as ever.

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce.
