Colgin Wine

California Wine, Napa Valley, St. Helena

About Colgin Winery and Vineyard

The Colgin winery is located at the northern end of IX Estate in the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena, California. A collaboration between Tom Faherty, architect from Valley Architects of St. Helena, Hendrix Allardyce Interior Design of Los Angeles, Mark Aubert and the owners, the winery features classical design coupled with contemporary technology. The winery is not open to the public, however you can buy it here. Ann Barry Colgin, owner of Colgin Cellars, heads a highly talented team who produce some of Napa Valley’s most sought after hand-crafted wines. Colgin founded the winery in 1992 with a vision of making the finest wines possible from exceptional hillside vineyards in Napa Valley. Each of the five wines produced at Colgin Cellars displays a distinctive personality and sense of place.

Born in Waco, Texas, Colgin completed her undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University and received her M.A. from New York University. She also completed the Sotheby’s Decorative Works of Art Course in London, England. An avid arts and antiques enthusiast, Colgin was President of Fairchilds Fine Art, Inc. based in Florida from 1985 to 1997.

Mark Aubert, graduate of California State University at Fresnogrew up in St. Helena on Rockland Road, a stone's throw from Tychson Hill Vineyard. He joined the Colgin Cellars team as winemaker in 1999. Mark is known for his classical winemaking techniques and also contributed his expertise to the design of our new state-of-the art winery in the Pritchard Hill area of Napa Valley. He spends much of his time in our vineyards working closely with David Abreu.

David Abreu is a third generation native of Napa Valley. He grew up in Rutherford where his parents were ranchers. In 1980 he founded David Abreu Vineyard Management. He focuses on vineyards in the Napa Valley from Oakville to Calistoga and is renowned for his knowledge of the terroirs of the area. He is the vineyard manager for the Tychson Hill Vineyard and IX Estate.

Colgin purchases grapes from Abreu's Madrona Ranch Vineyard and Thorevilos Vineyards to create the blend for "Cariad."

Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2000 vintage was the first bottling of Colgin Cellars' estate grown "Tychson Hill Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon. The unique Aiken soil type coupled with carefully selected rootstock and clones closely spaced on the east-facing slope gives a strong personality to the wines. "The Aiken soils give a remarkable fresh berry scented wine unlike any Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted" proclaimed Aubert. Annual Production: 250 cases (approximately)

Herb Lamb Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Aromas of ripe, dense, black fruits coupled with a strong blueberry essence and floral notes showcase the wonderful terroir of the Herb Lamb Vineyard. The first vintage for Colgin Herb Lamb was 1992. The wine is aged in 100% new Taransaud barrels. These wines have a voluptuous texture and lingering finish. Annual Production: 300 cases (approximately)

Cariad Napa Valley Red Wine

The 1999 Cariad marks Colgin's first-ever bottling of a Bordeaux Style Blend. Cariad is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes all come from vineyards owned by our esteemed vineyard manager, David Abreu. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are from the famed Madrona Ranch Vineyard and the Petit Verdot is from Thorevilos Vineyard. The word "cariad" means love in Welsh. The wine embodies the structure that has become a hallmark of Colgin wines: bright jammy fruit aromas and character combined with soft ripe tannins. Cariad is hedonistic in its complexity. Annual Production: 500 cases (approximately)

IX Estate Napa Valley Red Wine

At elevations from 940 to over 1400 feet, this extremely rocky estate vineyard site overlooking Lake Hennessey produces wines with great depth and complexity. IX Estate is planted with rare selections of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Each year the blend emphasizes the low yielding, voluptuous and concentrated aspect of this unique terroir. The wines are exotic and sophisticated. Annual Production: 1200 cases (approximately)

IX Estate Syrah

Deeply saturated black in color with wild blackberry, pepper and a sauvage note of game and animal, the IX Estate Syrah is a show stopper. The wine displays the pedigree of its Cote Rotie and Hermitage clones planted in a site that seems made for this varietal. Annual Production: 300 cases (approximately)
