Professional Wine Reviews for Gamla Cabernet Sauvignon

Rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast
Scents of vanilla bean and crushed violet add interest to the dark-fruit driven bouquet. The firmly structured mouth shows the same depth of flavor, with concentrated notes of boysenberry and cassis that are matched similarly strong earthy elements of black tea leaves and leathery spice.

Additional Information on Gamla Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery: Gamla

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever. Their sharp and astringent nature has a wonderful ability to mellow and round with age, and when helped by being blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc varietals as is done in Bordeaux and elsewhere the results can be truly remarkable. What is most special about Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is the fact that they have a true affinity for oak, and when aged in barrels made of this fragrant wood, the wine which comes out of them a few years later holds an amazing array of flavors and aromas, making Cabernet Sauvignon based wines some of the most memorable in the world. Single variety bottles from the New World made from this grape are also increasing in popularity, as the strong flavors and full-bodied nature of these wines is a great match for many global cuisines.

Region: Galilee

There are few regions in the world which are as renowned for their historical and cultural importance as Galilee. However, as a wine region, this area of Israel remains relatively undiscovered by much of the western world. As one might expect, Galilee is an important producer of kosher wines, with the vast majority of the produce made there carefully overseen by religious specialists ensuring that purity laws are observed. The result of this is a reasonably large industry focusing on Jewish communities around the world, who wish to enjoy classic, Old World style wines packed full of fascinating flavors and aromas. Galilee's mineral rich and volcanic soils allow vintners in the area to experiment with a wide range of grape varietals, and dozens of popular imported French varietals flourish well there.

Country: Israel

For thousands of years now, Israel has been an important country when it comes to wine production. Today, wineries across Israel are having great success with the imported French varietals which have proven to be a fine match for the climate and soil types across the country, and grapes such as Cabernet Sauvigon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc make up for the vast majority of varietals grown on Israeli soil. Israel enjoys a Mediterranean climate in many parts of the country, and even more desert-type regions such as the Negev are proving to be ideal locations for viticulture, thanks to a combination of traditional and modern techniques, and advanced irrigation methods. Israeli wines are almost always made to kosher requirements, and as such have a high demand all over the world by Jewish communities, as well as being popular with many other people due to their quality and characteristics.
