About Groth Vineyard Wines

Our objective at Groth Winery is to produce the best wine that a vintage will allow. All of our resources; our property, the skills of our employees, are dedicated to this objective. We believe that if we make great wine, success will follow. In 1981, the Groth’s purchased a 121 acre parcel in Oakville. In 1982, they added a second vineyard of 44 acres located south of Yountville. These vineyards, which total 165 acres on the valley floor of Napa, are the primary source of grapes for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines produced by Groth Winery. Groth Winery was established in 1982, and they first crushed grapes for their own wines this same year. Production increased quickly to 30,000 cases by 1984. In 1985 the Winery deserved, and needed full-time attention from Dennis and Judy. They moved their family to the Oakville property. In 1989 the Winery building was completed. Since 1982 Groth Winery has established its reputation as an outstanding producer of Napa Valley Wines.

Groth Winery 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon

Groth Vineyards 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon: Our 2000 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon continues our pursuit of excellence from the Oakville AVA. The wine shows the ultimate in character that we expect from our Oakville vineyards - full, rich aromas and flavors redolent of ripe stone fruits and dark berries. In the mouth, the wine is lush and soft with a subtle tannin backbone that will allow the wine to enhance its beauty with proper bottle age.

Groth Winery 1999 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Groth Winery 1999 Resereve Caberner Sauvignon: Our Reserve Cabernet is distinguished from our Estate Cabernet at the very beginning in the vineyard. Selected portions of our Oakcross Vineyard are allowed further ripening time in order to intensify the rich cherry/berry characters that define our vineyard site. Further selection in the vineyard and at the winery result in distinctive notes of plum, black cherry, vanilla and spice are apparent in the extraordinary aroma and flavor profile of this Reserve vintage...

Groth Winery 2000 Merlot

Groth vineyard 2000 Merlot: Cool and long AGAIN! As with the 1998 and 1999 vintages these two words describe the harvest of 2000. Due to coolness during the Spring and most of the Summer the grapes retained much of their acidity allowing us to let the grapes hang until true ripeness occurred. A brief heat wave in July rounded out the need for heat that pushed the grapes to beautiful sugars. Overall, the vintage appears to be producing flavorful, crisp wines in quantities larger than in the past two vintages.

Groth Winery 2001 Chardonnay

Groath Winery 2001 Chardonnay: Long, cool fermentation in a mixture of old and new barrels gives our Chardonnay layers of fruitiness and complexity that result in a wine that is very enjoyable when young or after several years of bottle age. This method of fermentation, in conjunction with whole cluster pressing and "sur lie" aging add layers of toastiness and creaminess to the wine. Together these components meld together harmoniously to create a balanced wine that is both lively and rich in aroma and flavor.

Groth Winery 2002 Sauvignon Blanc

Groth vineyards 2002 Sauivignon Blanc: The 2002 harvest was characterized by a diversity of temperatures and yields that resulted in white wines of incredible fruitiness and depth, and in red wines of fabulous color and concentration. A mild growing season with occasional heat spikes brought the grapes into the winery with exceptional development and character. The Fall heat spikes caused a certain amount of “harvest compression” allowing us to harvest the physiologically mature reds in a relatively short period. All in all, the 2002 vintage should develop into a real keeper!
