A masterful medley of blackberry, plum, and vanilla. The mouthfeel displays a balanced acidity.

Many, many wineries in California were set up as the personal dreams of individuals, looking for the good life and a chance to get away from the city and back to nature. It isn’t difficult to understand why - California has some of the best weather, some of the best landscapes, and some of the best vine growing country in the world. Who wouldn’t want to get away from it all out there on the west coast, and spend their time wandering among vines and tasted each year’s produce as it comes out of the barrel? A great example of a personal project that became a leading name in the Californian wine scene is that of Joseph Carr wines. Joseph Carr had a strong background in wine, and a passion for the subject, having worked as a sommelier for a decade before taking up a job within the executive world of the wine industry. However, by 2005, he’d decided that his talents and enthusiasm was better off being put to good use in the field rather than from behind a desk, and so he set up his winery with the idea to create a new family business for the years to come.

Joseph Carr wines took its inspiration from the key French regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, and as such, has a strong emphasis on red wines made from blended vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as releasing occasional bottles of superb Chardonnay. However, the winery is keen to remind us that despite taking its cues from the Old World, and emulating the sophistication and reverence found in France, it is nonetheless still very much a Californian, New World winery, unafraid to take risks and innovate with the best of them.

The winery of Joseph Carr is careful to source its fruit from only the finest vineyards found across California. Reading the sources of Joseph Carr grapes is like taking a tour of California’s best - his fruit comes from St Helena, Rutherford (where the winery is located), Stag’s Leap, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Coast AVAs. Despite using such prestigious appellations, Joseph Carr wines are dedicated to producing wines which offer exceptional value for money and which are accessible for all.
