Professional Wine Reviews for Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis Faconnieres 1er Cru 2010

Rated 93 by Robert Parker
The 2010 Morey St. Denis Les Faconnieres saturates every corner of the palate with tremendous depth in its fruit. It possesses striking minerality, which serves to balance some of the wine’s more overt, bold tendencies. The high percentage of clay in this site gives the wine its broad shoulders. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Burgundy

The region of Burgundy has become synonymous with high quality red wines, but in actual fact the region consistently produces a wide variety of fine wines of many different styles, rigorously protected by French wine laws designed to keep reputations and quality at a very high level. The region benefits greatly from a warm and sunny summer climate, which, coupled with the excellent quality soils which typify the region, and centuries of experience and expertise, has led to the region being known all over the world for the excellence of its produce. The majority of grapevines grown here are of the Pinot Noir varietal, which has helped Burgundy become known as the definitive region for elegant and smooth red wines, but Chardonnay grapes and many others are also grown in abundance and used to make both still and sparkling wines.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.

Appellation: Cote De Nuits

Cotes de Nuits is one of France's most important wine sub-regions, located in the heart of the Burgundy wine region which is recognized around the world as one of the finest places for wine there is. As with the rest of Burgundy, the wines of Cotes de Nuits are made using highly traditional methods, and are primarily made using the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes which grow so well there. The limestone rich, chalky soils provide plenty of character for the Chardonnay grapes, which are used to make the highly flavorful and complex white wines the region is renowned for. However, Cotes de Nuits is mainly a red wine producing region, and the Pinot Noir grapes which ripen fully under the summer sun each year are used to make red wines of real quality and distinction.
