GH Mumm Winery

French Champagne, Rheims

About GH Mumm winery

History

The von Mumm family, whose lineage boasts barons and knights, can be traced back to the 12th century. In 1761, Peter Arnold Mumm started a wine production and distribution business in Cologne. Thanks to the good relations between France and Germany at the beginning of the 19th century, P.A. Mumm’s three sons, Jacobus, Gottlieb and Phillip, were able to establish a champagne house in Rheims, the coronation city of French kings. They recognised the sales potential of this wine, much-prized by Europe’s royal families. Travelling the world and growing their business as they went, the directors of G.H. Mumm prospered from their contacts with different cultures and nationalities. To this day, the House of G.H. Mumm retains a multicultural approach and an openness to new ideas and perspectives.

Vineyards

G.H. Mumm has nearly 218 hectares of vineyards rated at 98% on the Champagne quality scale.

These are mainly sited in the eight most renowned Grands Crus in Champagne: Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzy, Verzenay, Avize, Cramant and Mailly-Champagne. These holdings cover 25% of G.H. Mumm’s production needs. The remaining 75% comes from independent growers with whom the company has developed strong ties.

This combination of its own vineyards and external supply enables the House of G.H. Mumm to maintain a consistent style and continue its philosophy of close scrutiny over grape quality. At G.H. Mumm, the chef de cave can call on raw material of the very best quality from a range of sources.

Today

With nearly eight million bottles sold worldwide each year, G.H Mumm today ranks as the third-largest champagne producer in the world.

Exports account for around 60% of the company’s sales. G.H. Mumm champagne is found in more than 100 countries around the world and is a leading brand in Europe, especially in France and Italy. The house is also looking to expand its markets in Asia. In 2005, the House became part of the French group Pernod Ricard, the world number two in wines and spirits.
