Since the mid twentieth century, California’s Napa Valley has gone from strength to strength regarding the consistency and quality of its wines. This is due in part to the wonderful terroir that typifies the region - mineral rich soils and a perfect climate for viticulture - but also because of the tireless dedication and innovative spirit of its boldest winemakers. Robert Mondavi is certainly one of these. For several decades, Mondavi has been committed to producing the finest Napa Valley wines, taking his inspiration from the classic regions of France and injecting his own ideas and unique approach to viticulture, with stunning results.

Robert Mondavi opened his winery, which is named after himself, in the 1960s. His vision was to produce Napa wines which, while being distinctive and expressive of the land he works with, could stand up against and compete with the finest wines of the Old World. He selected the very heart of the Napa Valley, To Kalon Vineyard, as the home for his winery, and this special part of Oakville California quickly became the center for some of the finest wines California has ever seen. Mondavi works mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which grow in low yields across his land, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, from which he makes his signature white wines.

In more recent years, Mondavi has expanded his repertoire. Today, he sources his grapes from many of Napa Valley’s most prestigious and highly regarded vineyards, and produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines which are capable of expressing the finest features of their terroir, as well as the range of traditional and modern methods he employs in their production. He is joined at Robert Mondavi winery by a dedicated team of vintners, led by the extremely capable and award winning Genevieve Janssens, who was lauded as winemaker of the year in 2010.
