Selaks wines form an integral part of the extensive Nobilo Wine Group portfolio. There is some interesting history involved with the success of the Selaks brands. The Selak family arrived in New Zealand in 1934 with the original company founded by Croatian Marino Selak. He was an honourable pioneer, who at the time, brought great skills and traditions of winemaking to the country. Mate, his nephew, arrived later in 1938 and established market gardens and vineyards in the west Auckland area with him. His two sons, Michael and Ivan then took over the business and later in September 1998, Nobilo Vintners purchased Selaks Wines which in turn, was purchased by leading global wine company, BRL Hardy of Australia in mid-2000 prior to itself being purchased by giant Constellation Brands Inc.
With this purchase, the company 'inherited' renowned winemaker and innovator of Selaks wines, Darryl Woolley, now Nobilo Wine Groups' Manager of Winemaking & Viticulture. Woolley continues to be 'hands on' with a solid support team of winemakers and viticulturists who work out of three wineries, Marlborough in the South Island, Huapai, West Auckland in the North Island and Corner 50 in Hawkes Bay in the North Island.
The Premium Selection range continues to be one of New Zealand’s most successful brands today. It consistently over-delivers at the price point and is one of the most popular-selling brands in the NZ$12-$15 price segment in supermarkets, according to monthly AC Nielsen data.
The flagship range, Selaks Founders Reserve, regularly takes home Trophies with annual regularity. The best fruit each vintage is selected for this premium range. There are some vintages where no wine will have been produced because the quality of the fruit might not have been to the high standard required for this label that particular year. Matador Estate, a vineyard adjoining our Blenheim Winery, provides excellent fruit for the Selaks range and is renowned for its achievements at the annual Bragato Winegrowers' Vineyard Competition.
