Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a winery based in Italy’s beautiful region of Tuscany. This special part of Italy, with its verdant, rolling hillsides, has been the epicenter of fine Italian viticulture for two thousand years, and continues to dominate the country’s winemaking industry to this day. It is also the home of the Super Tuscans - a group of winemakers who decided to rebel against the region’s stringent laws regarding permitted grape varietals and blending techniques, and who instead decided to follow their instincts and use imported French grape varietals to make the sort of wines they felt Tuscany should be producing. One of the wineries associated with the Super Tuscan style of red wine was Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, a winery which continues to impress with its bold flavors and deep complexity in the twenty-first century.

Located on the Tuscan coast, overlooking the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is famed for the quality of its Bordeaux Style Super Tuscan red wine. It planted its first vineyards in the early 1980s, and produced its first vintage in 1985, just before the opening of the modern winery buildings which are used today. While most of the wines produced by Tenuta dell'Ornellaia are blended wines made from the quintessential Bordeaux-based grape varietals of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it also produces beautifully soft and rounded single varietal Merlot wines, and a blend which is more representative of the region, being made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. As with much of Tuscany, the vineyards of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia benefit greatly from the gently sloping hillsides of the region, which catch the bright sunshine and long warm summer days the region is renowned for. Gentle, cooling sea breezes temper the heat, and add balance and structure to the grapes, while the mineral rich soils bring their own features to this great winery’s produce.
