The Douro river valley, which crosses the border between Spain and Portugal, has been at the center of fine Iberian wine making for well over a thousand years. The soils deposited by the river are full of fascinating characteristics and minerals, and expert vintners have been exploiting these features for generations, producing the signature wines of these two key Old World countries. One of the newer wineries on the scene is Teso La Monja, a fine wine company based in Toro.

Over the past ten years, Teso La Monja has been producing characterful wines which have helped redefine the region for the twenty-first century, and this labor of love is paying off with excellent reviews and legions of new fans. The winery is run by the Eguren family, who are renowned for being meticulous in their selection of the terroir used for their signature wines. Over the past two decades, the Egurens have sought out the very best plots of land for their grapevines, and now own vineyards in Valdefinjas and Villabuena del Puente, as well as their original one in Toro. These vineyards benefit from their proximity to the Douro river, as well as the gently rolling, rugged terrain on which they sit. The microclimate in the villages of Zamora province - where we find Teso La Monja’s acres - is ideal for viticulture, with long, hot days, gentle breezes blowing down the valley, and cooler nights resulting in wines of superb balance and finesse.

Teso La Monja are very much an exclusive winery, producing wines in small batches which reflect the care and attention to detail which typifies the Eguren family way of doing things. The grapes are hand picked, the wines aged in small, French oak barrels, and the result is stunning - wines of real purity, elegance and sophistication, with plenty of complexity and character.
