Not yet in bottle is the 2013 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard. Often a candidate for the top Zinfandel in any vintage (along with the Jackass Hill of Martinelli, a handful of Zinfandels from Carlisle, and more recently Bedrock and Limerick Lane), this wine from a vineyard on the west side of St. Helena tucked under the Mayacamas Mountains has been a staple of Turley's brilliant winemaking for many, many years. These head-pruned, dry-farmed vines were planted in 1902 and 1903, and the wine seems to be a perfect messenger for them, providing power and elegance, no matter what the vintage seems to offer. One of the more popular grape varietals to come primarily out of the New World in recent decades has been the Zinfandel, a thin-skinned grape which thrives in warm climates and produces wines which carry a wide range of flavors Indeed, Zinfandel grapes are highly varied depending on the climate and time of harvesting, displaying everything from sweet berries to spicy anise when harvested young, and producing excellent dessert wine when the grapes are left to over-ripen in the sun. Zinfandel varietal grapes are renowned for being one of the species which is highly capable of showing off the best features of the terroir they are grown on. This is partly due to those thin skins, and the light tannins they provide, allowing all sorts of other features and influences to shine through in the fermented juices. However, these grapes are quite delicate and not so easy to grow successfully, being highly sensitive to rot or from drying out when the weather is too hot.

California has long been the New World's most important and prodigious wine producing regions, with a history which stretches back to the 18th century and the Spanish pioneers who settled here. Today, California produces vast quantities of wine, and if it were a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine on earth. Despite experiencing many problems in the mid 20th century, including a very serious blight which almost crippled the state's wine industry, the ideal terroir and excellent climate ensured that Californian wines soon became the envy of the New World once again. California produces a vast range of wines, and utilizes a long list of fine grape varietals, with many wineries and their produce more closely resembling those of France and other Old World countries in regards to character, practices and flavors

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.

There are few places on earth quite as ideal for viticulture and wine production as California's Napa Valley, a place which is now considered something of a spiritual home for the American wine industry. For generations now, Napa Valley has consistently produced the finest wines to come out of the United States, and has used its ideal climate and terroir to coax the very finest flavors and aromas from a wide range of grape varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel, amongst many others. Shielded from the oceanic climate by mountain ranges, the Napa Valley provides plenty of sunshine, heat and little rainfall in which grapes can grow and ripen fully, and express plenty of their superb terroir, much to the delight of New World wine drinkers across the globe.
