Additional Information on Yalumba Pinot Grigio Y Series 2013

Winery: Yalumba

Varietal: Pinot Gris

The Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape varietal is now one of the most widely grown vines in the world, due to the surge in popularity of Pinot Grigio wines over the past twenty years or so. These grayish-blue fruits, which hang in their distinctively conical bunches, are responsible for a very broad range of wines famous for their variety of color tones and flavors Pinot Grigio varietal grapes are highly influenced by terroir, climate and particularly the skill and expertise of the vintners who process them. As such, there are full bodied, amber colored wines made from this grape, and there are equally delicious yet far leaner, paler, lighter bodied and crisp white wines made from the same species in other parts of the world.

Region: South Australia

South Australia is one of the world's most productive wine regions, with millions of bottles being produced annually in this vast area. The region itself is highly varied when it comes to both terrain and climatic conditions, and much of the region needs year round irrigation from freshwater sources in order to keep the arid and dry land fertile enough to support vines. Wineries in South Australia were first established over a century ago, and have been operating in the global market for decades now, having learned over time how best to grow their distinctive fine grape varietals in this often unpredictable and difficult place. The results have been excellent, with many of the finest Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Shiraz wines to come out of the New World having their home in South Australia.

Country: Australia

Whilst every Australian state has some level of wine production, it is in South Australia and on the island of Tasmania where the finest wines are made to the highest quantities. Here, the scorching Australian sun is a little tamer, and the heat is tempered by brisk oceanic winds, making the climate of these regions ideal for vineyard cultivation. The Tamar Valley on Tasmania has been making waves internationally in recent years, as both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varietals are thriving there and resulting in hugely flavorful wines, which are at once distinctly Australian, yet remain unique and interesting enough to surprise and impress. Elsewhere in the country, the Syrah grape (known locally as Shiraz) reigns supreme, as the long, hot summers allow these grapes to ripen fully and lend their intensely fruit-forward character to the ruby red Australian wines, which have such international appeal.
