Premiere Napa Valley - Merry Edwards

March 9, 2015

Well, we are just back from 6 days of wine tasting at Premiere Napa Valley and, while we can barely think about any more wine, we did find some gems that we are excited to talk about.

It may seem odd to talk about a Sonoma Winery immediately after returning from Premiere Napa Valley, but that is exactly what I am going to do.

On one of the last days in California, we were invited to a private tasting at Merry Edwards Winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley, in what turned out to be one of the three most memorable winery visits of the week (I will be bringing all three to the blog). While the route that our GPS decided to use to get us to the winery was “interesting”, it was more than worth the travails.

Before I list the wines, I should mention the excellent staff. Everyone at Merry Edwards was extremely thoughtful and accommodating, and I cannot highlight that enough. As we always do, we asked to get right down to it, and not take a tour of the facility. That might sound counter-intuitive, but when you have seen a fermentation tank, you have seen every fermentation tank. And when you have seen a barrel aging room, you have seen every barrel aging room. Almost every tour will ignore this request and we will politely trudge through their facility nodding here and there and pretending it is all new and fascinating. At Merry Edwards, they immediately scrapped the walkthrough for us, and we were thrilled!

On the wines below, I rated them from (-) 1 star to (+) 3 stars, with 1 star being very good, 2 stars being great and 3 stars being profoundly great...with the caveat good/great/profound being very biased by how many wines I have tasted in my career. Most of these wines are available, with a few being released later this month

Merry Edwards Chardonnay 2011 *

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2012 *

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch 2012 **

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Coopersmith 2012 **

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Meredith Estate 2012 *

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Flax Vineyard 2012 (Pommard Clone…Beast!) *

Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley 2013 (Best Sauvignon Blanc I have had in years) **

Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Olivet Lane 2012 ½*

The Coopersmith Pinot Noir 2012 and the Sauvignon Blanc 2013 were both absolutely great, and we actually found ourselves buying bottles just to have back at the house that night.
