The 2019 Pinot Grigio from Abbazia di Novacella shows significantly more depth and complexity than you’d expect. Hints of wild herbs give way to ripe apple and apricot, offset by dusty dried flowers and lifting minerality. The interplay of acids and ripe fruit folds perfectly into the wine’s soft and enveloping textures, making for a fresh yet fully satisfying display. Sweet peach, hints of honey and inner florals linger throughout the remarkably pretty finish. If this is what the “entry-level” release of the 2019 is like, I can only imagine what the Praepositus will have to offer.

Varietal: Pinot Gris

One of the most versatile and interesting white wine grape varietals widely grown around the world is surely the Pinot Grigio. This grape comes in many different shades and colors, and unsurprisingly, it can also provide a remarkable range of flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is a varietal quite strongly influenced by both the terroir it is grown in, as well as by the expertise and intentions of the winery which is processing it. As such, many Pinot Grigio wines are relatively sweet, due to their high level of natural sugar. However, they can also be very dry for the same reasons, and in many countries they are aged and mellowed, resulting in beautiful tawny amber tones and a very rounded, full bodied character quite unlike white wines made from any other grape varietal.

There are few wine regions in Italy which generate quite as much intrigue and excitement amongst wine lovers as that of Trentino-Alto Adige. Situated in the northernmost borders of the country, Trentino-Alto Adige is a wine region quite unlike any other in Italy. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
