The 2020 Estate S.M.X. is the typical blend of 60% Syrah and 20% each of Merlot and Xinomavro (the S.M.X. grapes), all aged for 18 months in new French barriques. It comes in at 14.9% alcohol. Big and ripe, this still manages to maintain its balance. The tannins are relatively ripe as well, making this very drinkable now. As always, though, the key feature here is the enticing flavor medley from the blend. The Merlot and Xinomavro cut the Syrah and add different nuances typical of those grapes. The whole is complex, a little earthy and deliciously fruity too. This year's version in fact leans more to a big and fruity style. This seems very accessible, and I'm not quite convinced it is a great S.M.X., but it is still a very good one with at least some chance to improve. You'd be well advised to come back in a couple of years, when it may have acquired a little more distinction, but you can dive in now. It certainly tastes great. We'll see if it has any upside potential in time. There, I have some doubts. ... More details

Winery
Deep ruby color with purple hints. Powerful, pungent aromas of sweet cherry, candied plum and toasty vanillin oak. Full bodied and deep in dark fruit flavors, with a peppery and strong oak spicy accents background. The solid tannins build through the finish but there is plenty of supporting depth of fruit here, not to mention a bright acid lift on the back that adds energy. A ‘’Vin de Garde’’ with a great future.

Country: Greece

Thanks to thousands of years of viticulture, and a dedication to quality and experimentation, Greek wines remain in a league of their own and continue to surprise and delight wine lovers around the world. From the refined and delicious Agiorghitiko wines, with their deep ruby red color and intense fruit flavors, to the unusual and highly aromatic fortified wines made with the black Mavrodaphne grapes, Greek wine is renowned for its variety and consistent excellence. It seems the blazing Mediterranean sunshine allows wineries to make the most of the late harvests and all the intensity of flavor this brings, resulting in wines which are bursting with fruit-forward character and unusual aromas.
