The second vintage of the red Toro 2014 Aciano was cropped from an ungrafted three-hectare vineyard with a density of 900-1,000 plants per hectare on sandy soils with limestone, located in the village of El Pego, that he inherited from his grandfather. The vines are believed to be over 100 years old (Toro still has a wealth of old, ungrafted vineyards) and its full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts, with an infusion of the skins for some 30-45 days. The wine matured in 300- and 500-liter oak barrels for one year and two additional months in tank before it was bottled in February 2016. It has a spectacular nose mixing aromas of wild flowers and herbs, with something distinct, a little wild, bright, that I also found in the 2015 from Arribes (Camino de los Arrieros), mixing cassis and aromatic herbs with a meaty touch that transported me to the northern Rhône. Alvar now lives in the village, and he is much closer to the wine. In the past he didn't use all the grapes, but now he is able to ferment all the grapes from the village. The palate is medium-bodied with some fine tannins, a little warmer than 2013, with sandy tannins, quite fine and with a slightly bitter finish.

Varietal: Tempranillo

The Tempranillo grape varietal is often referred to as Spain's 'noble grape', and has over the past century been planted in several countries around the world. Tempranillo grapes produce beautiful ruby red wines, packed full of fascinating flavors which range from intensely fruity, to deep, dark and spicy, holding notes of vanilla, tobacco and leather. Their black skins hold plenty of tannins, and as such, they are often blended with other more rounded or brighter wines, to balance out the character and produce some truly exceptional examples. Tempranillo grapes often fall to a wide range of diseases, and are greatly effected by climatic conditions. They tend to grow best, however, in areas with a mixture of heat and bright sunshine, and brisk breezes which can cool the vines.
