2014 was not an easy vintage in Río Negro, but I'd say the 2014 Noemía is a triumph over the natural conditions of the year. This is pure Malbec from a 1.5-hectare plot planted in 1932 with a massale selection (Hans told me at Noemía they are anti-clone!) that is certified organically- and biodynamically-farmed. The soils are of alluvial origin, with lime, clay, gravel and limestone 1.2 meters below the surface. The year was quite windy, a common problem in the zone, with a fresh spring and a late summer that was quite intense during the harvest. The result is a ripe wine with 15% alcohol that is unnoticeable, as it's nicely balanced. To me, it's not about the amount of alcohol, it's about balance, and this one is balanced. The grapes are only picked in the morning, before it gets too warm, and they fermented with indigenous yeasts in 2,500-liter cement vats. Leaving the wine in the glass and not stirring it made the spicy oak aromas emerge, in a sign of youth. The aging lasted 18 months and was one-third in 600-liter demi-muids with thick staves and the rest in brand new French barriques from the prestigious coopers Darnajou and Surtep. This change in the oak is noticeable in the wine, which comes through as better integrated. We discussed which past vintage this 2014 could be compared with, and we agreed on 2012, a little riper and not as focused as the 2013. I personally think this 2014 has a better balanced palate than 2012, with finer tannins and a subtle minerality, a texture, rather than a flavor. Somehow the wine became more focused with time in the glass, so I think time in bottle will do it good. He had to do some sorting of the grapes, so final quantities were lower, so some 4,000 bottles were produced. It has been in bottle since December 2015. ... More details

Varietal: Malbec

Malbec grapes have a beautiful deep and dusty purple color, and can now be found growing in abundance in many different countries. They thrive most successfully in hot, dry southern climates, a long way from their home in native France. However, whilst many Old World wineries had and continue to have a lot of success with this flavorful grape, its susceptibility to rot and weakness against cold and damp meant that its usage began to dwindle in the countries such as France whilst it grew in the New. Malbec's thick skins lend it strong tannins, something which allows the wines produced from these grapes to hold their distinctive, astringent and full-bodied character. They also tend to be packed full of plummy, fleshy fruit-forward flavors, making them an interesting and complex grape for single variety wines, as well as an ideal grape for blending and aging.

Region: Patagonia

Patagonia is not a region which immediately comes to mind when considering ideal locations for viticulture, which is something which makes Patagonia's annual output of fine wines all the more impressive. Situated in the very south of South America, and lying on both the Argentinian and Chilean sides of the Andean mountains, Patagonia has been settled in by many different nationalities over the centuries, making it a fascinating place for wine production and culture. Perhaps due to the eclectic mix of people who made Patagonia their home, the wines of the region are an interesting mix of many European style wines – far more 'old world' in style than other wines found elsewhere in Argentina or Chile. Whilst red wine varietals such as Pinot Noir and Malbec thrive quite happily in the Patagonian soils, it is the region's white wine grapes; Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer which are most widely admired for the wines they produce.

Country: Argentina

In the dry, arid deserts of Argentina, wineries and winemakers are focusing their efforts on producing high quality wines for the world market. By experimenting with both traditional and modern methods and technologies, they have found great success with a wide variety of grapes well suited to the conditions of the country, particularly Malbec, Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the past decade, Argentinian wineries have continued to aim high, and this has led to a range of new wines using grape varietals not typically associated with the country. The cooler regions of Argentina are seeing more vineyards being planted with Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir varietals, something that is beginning to produce fantastic results, which are at once representative of the country's wines - with all their fruity and bold character - but are also pushing the boundaries of what we expect from a New World country.
