The Adriatic Coast of Italy has an impressive wine history, which stretches back to pre-Roman times and to the age when wines were first being made and vines were first being cultivated. Today, many of us see wine as a luxury, but for those in this part of Italy, it remains an essential part of everyday life, bringing families together and adding a sense of tradition and great flavor to any meal or social gathering. One such winery keeping the spirit of this side of Italy alive is Di Majo Norante, a wine company dedicated to producing high quality wines which are kind to the palate, and kind to the hallowed land their vines are grown on.
Di Majo Norante was founded in 1968 by the Di Majo family. Their vision was to take their 200 acres of pristine Adriatic land, and use it to create characterful wines which are affordable for all, thus removing the elitism within fine Italian wine which was threatening to take away the approachable, friendly and democratic nature of the country’s historic wine industry. With Alessio Di Majo at the helm, and famed oenologist Riccardo Cotarella as leading consultant, the Di Majo Norante winery went from strength to strength. Today, the winery is enjoying praise from across the world. The winemakers put this down to the quality of their terroir, and their dedication to environmentally-friendly farming practices which they claim not only protect their land for future generations, but which also allow for greater expression of that land in the bottle.
Di Majo Norante can be found on the Marquis Norante Santa Cristina estate, in the heart of Molise - a historic wine region which bridges Puglia and Abruzzo in the south of Italy. This estate is extremely well established, having been at the very soul of Molise’s wine industry for over two hundred years. As such, there is a sense of tradition and a reverence for the past which infuses the work of Di Majo Norante, and yet the winemakers here feel inspired by their history while not restricted by it.
