The tiny production 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Villages la Petite Sibérie comes from a single parcel and is mostly very old vine Grenache blended with 5% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. Aged in new French oak, it offers loads black raspberry, spice-box, toasty oak, and dried flowers that continues to develop beautifully with time in the glass. Full-bodied, silky and elegant on the palate, it has ample depth and richness, no hard edges, beautiful purity, and a weightless, heaven finish. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age to integrate its oak (this cuvee always needs short-term cellaring) but is an incredible expression of Grenache from the Roussillon that delivers the goods. Bravo to Hervé Bizeul. ... More details

While I have a slight preference for the more-structured le Clos des Fées bottling, there's no doubting the unctuous appeal of the 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Villages la Petite Sibérie. Named for its cool site planted to old bush-vine Grenache, Little Siberia is a rich, almost chocolaty wine, filled with black cherries and dusty cocoa. Bizeul tops the wine with a blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre, but much of the structure must come from the new French oak barrels used for aging, despite how little cedar is detectable on the nose or palate. Long and velvety on the finish, wines like this show what parts of Roussillon are capable of when pampered by impeccable vineyard and cellar work.

This dark and dense wine is lovely and enticing right from the start, with concentrated aromas of black cherry, plum and mulberry. It's similarly brooding and rich in black fruit and berry flavors on the palate, topped with notes of roasted cocoa nib, pressed violet, garrigue oils and black tea for added depth and interest. The palate is smooth and velvety, with refined yet structuring tannins and a long finish of plush black fruit and lightly salted dark chocolate. Drink now–2029.
Winery
Endearing wine, impressive, extremely changeable according to places and occasions, evolving in the glass for several hours, from a breathtaking length to the tight tannins of a memorable velvety. Maturity 10 years, aging potential 30 years.

green grapes

Varietal: Grenache

For many centuries now, vintners in the dry and arid regions of Europe have been growing the purple skinned fruits of the Grenache vines for use in a wide range of different wines. Their influence and popularity led to them being planted all over the New World in any region with the correct climatic conditions for them to thrive in, away from the damp or wet weather which causes this particular varietal to very easily rot. Grenache grapes are prized by many as a result of their spicy berry flavors, and the fact that they have a relatively high alcohol content in the bottle. This has led to them being often used as a blending grape, although single variety bottles are also common and make the most of their light body and interesting, rich flavors

Region: Languedoc Roussillon

The southern French region of Languedoc Roussillon is one of the most important wine regions on earth, being responsible for over a third of France's annual output – a vast quantity of wine which exceeds even the annual output of the United States. Despite the fact that Languedoc Roussillon produces such enormous quantities of wine, the quality of the region's output remains a priority for the wineries which operate there. Languedoc Roussillon takes great pride in the fact that could be considered one of the oldest wine regions in the world, with a history which stretches back thousands of years to the ancient Greeks, and remains highly important to this day. Vintners in Languedoc Roussillon work with a wide range of grape varietals, and the region produces a wide variety of wines, from still red and white table wines, to blended and aged wines, dessert and sparkling wines.
