The French region of Burgundy has enjoyed a reputation for excellence for a very, very long time. This special corner of France is one which has been associated with fine viticulture for hundreds of years, and all over the region you’ll find traditional, family-run wineries which are dedicated to pristine white and red winemaking, using the native grape varietals of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Dugat-Py is one such family based organisation. Situated in the beautiful appellation of Gevrey-Chambertin, it is now in its 13th generation of vintners - an astonishing history that puts it among the oldest continually run wineries to be found anywhere in the country.

Despite its long history, Dugat-Py has only really risen to real prominence over the past ten years. For generations, the winery was focused mainly on the local wine scene, but its new generation of expert vintners are using their passion to reach a more international audience. It began estate bottling only in 1989, when it was run by the charismatic winemaker Pierre Dugat, but has since been passed on to his son Bernard, a talented vintner whose shrewdness and innovative nature has seen him praised as one of the finest in Burgundy. Bernard Dugat currently oversees five hectares of prime vineyards, where Dugat-Py grows their characterful grapes. These five hectares include holdings in three Grand Cru sites, and several Premier Crus, meaning that excellence is assured year on year.

The vines themselves are very old, with sixty five years being the average age. Dugat-Py is a winery which is focused on meticulous attention to detail with the fine vines they work with - expression of this special terroir is key - and they use several techniques and methods to ensure they get the most out of their land. Bernard Dugat believes that organic and biodynamic methods are the best way to reach this level of expression, with minimal intervention, hand-picking of grapes, and no filtering or fining being common practices at this ancient and highly respected winery.
