The NV Crémant de Loire Brut de Schistes is a sparkling blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Chardonnay whose vines were planted in the 1980s and 1990s in the larger St. Lambert area, so on schist soils. The base wine didn’t undergo malolactic fermentation and went into the second alcohol fermentation in the bottle without fining. The wine is always kept on lattes for 24-36 months and disgorged with a dosage between zero and 3.5 grams per liter, depending on vintage. The label doesn’t show which edition you get, unfortunately, but mine—from Becky Wassermann in Beaune—is based on the 2015 vintage and was disgorged in January 2019. The color and bouquet are bright, fresh and delicate, with ripe white fruit aromas, such as yellow apples, along with very fine brioche and lemon notes. With 12.5% alcohol, this is a light to medium-weight, bone-dry but intense and structured Crémant with a long and concentrated, fresh and sustainable finish. This is a serious wine to have with fish and white meat rather than as an aperitif. Really fabulous and with a perfect yeasty layer that gives texture and rounds up this otherwise steely Brut, which is in fact a Brut de Brut, if not even a Brut Nature. Highly recommended. Tasted in May 2021. ... More details

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The careful blending of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes has long been the secret to the success of the famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region. The wines of this region have gone down in history as the finest example of France's sparkling produce, and the methods of processing the grapes in this region have been imitated in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are actually seven different grape varietals allowed to be included in a Champagne sparkling wine, although grape varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Pinot Gris are used less and less commonly in its production. Whilst the Chardonnay varietal grapes offer their distinctive biscuit flavor and wonderful astringency, it is the Pinot Noir grapes (most commonly used for producing beautifully light red wines) which give the Champagne wines their length and backbone.

Region: Loire Valley

Within France, the one region most closely associated with fine white and rosé wines is surely the Loire Valley. With over eight controlled appellations, and a relatively large expanse of land covering this wide valley, the Loire Valley is an ideal location for wineries wishing to produce large quantities of excellent quality vines for their wine production. Indeed, this region has been associated with excellent white wines for over a thousand years, with it once being the favorite wine region for the crowned heads of England, France and beyond. Today, it produces a wide range of white wines, and several rosé and red varieties also. It is also widely celebrated for being home to some of France's most lively and fruity sparkling crémant wines, which more than match those produced in nearby Champagne.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
