Gigondas - Rhone Valley - France

Professional Wine Reviews for Domaine Raspail (Dominique Ay) Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2013

Rated 92 by Stephen Tanzer
Youthful violet color. Pungent, mineral-accented aromas of raspberry, garrigue and floral oils. Silky and complex on the palate, offering potent flavors of red fruit liqueur, lavender pastille and star anise. Rich but surprisingly lively, finishing with powerful thrust and shaped by supple, harmonious tannins.
Rated 90 by Robert Parker
Tasted out of bottle, the 2013 Gigondas is a smoking success in this vintage. Offering up classic raspberries, strawberries, ground herbs, licorice and sweet spice, it’s medium-bodied and balanced on the palate with a layered, pretty and elegant style. It’s not a heavy weight, and I wouldn’t push the aging curve, but it’s nevertheless a beautiful wine that will impress for at least another 5-7 years.

Winery Domaine Raspail (Dominique Ay)

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

It is widely understood and accepted that the finest wines in the world come out of France. Whether you are drinking a vintage bottle from one of the famed Grand Cru wineries of Bordeaux - such as Chateau Margaux or Chateau Lafite-Rothschild - or a more simple and affordable bottle from one of the lesser known appellations in Burgundy, the likelihood is that the wine is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, and has a fine, balanced structure typical of almost all French produce. This reputation for excellence is taken extremely serious by the French, with dozens of regularly updated laws and regulations ensuring the quality and accurate labeling of wines. Such dedication and passion for fine wine, representative of the region in which it is produced, means customers can be assured that when they buy a bottle from France, they are buying something almost certain to please and delight.
