The 2016 Rkatsiteli, from old vines, is holding nicely since first seen. Lively and fresh, this still has that long and juicy finish that made me drool a bit. It is young and vibrant, but it's a bit better integrated now nonetheless. That makes it better overall. It is nicely concentrated—while always maintaining finesse—with ripe and succulent fruit. It finishes very dry, and it has power to spare. It is not a fruit-forward white as such. There is a touch of a stony nuance on the finish and perhaps a touch of reduction. That got better as it aired out, and it mostly disappeared. The wine overall was better the next day—or even two days later. This focused and penetrating white is impressive, superb now and likely to hold well, perhaps (under screwcap) longer than anticipated. I'll continue to take the end-date drinking window in stages, though. Needless to say, it is a very nice value.

Region: New York

New York state has a relatively long history of wine-making and vineyard cultivation, with vineyards in the region dating back to the Dutch settlements of the 17th century. As such, the region has slowly discovered the unique qualities of their terroir, and has developed a distinctive set of grape varietals which have gone on to represent the state and make their wines both unique and highly regarded. New York state has four key wine producing areas – Lake Erie AVA, Finger Lakes AVA, Hudson River and Long Island, each making the most of their relatively cool climate and characterful terroirs. The strong blend of both traditional and contemporary wine making methods found in this region has led to New York state being responsible for many of the finest and most interesting wines to come out of the United States.

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere.
