Erna Schein-Behrens Family Winery

California Wine, Napa Valley

About Erna Schein-Behrens Family Winery

Erna Schein is a boutique winery in the truest sense. Owned by Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward, who’ve made wine under the Behrens & Hitchcock label since 1993, Erna Schein produces small lots of six or seven wines a year at its winery perched high on top of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley. Each wine is a low tech labor of love: crushed into one-ton T-bins, punched down by hand, gently transferred to barrel, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. One only has to look at Les and Lisa’s hands during harvest to know their wines are truly “hand-crafted.” The couple also gravitates toward small, interesting and low-yielding vineyard sites, primarily in Napa Valley and Mendocino County, working with growers who they know, like and trust, and who are as obsessive about quality as they are. For Les and Lisa, it’s all about letting the vineyards steal the show, and allowing the wines to speak for themselves.

Erna Schein Handcrafted Wines ‘Homage To Ed’ 2005

Rated 93 - Intense and concentrated, with well-structured exotic leather, spice box, beefy wild berry and blackberry fruit that picks up a note of tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins. Drink now through 2016. 300 cases made. - Wine Spectator

Erna Schein Handcrafted Wines Petite Sirah 2006

Rated 91 - Charming and fragrant, with pepper and lavender notes and full-bodied flavors of blackberry, licorice and huckleberry that are dark, intense and chewy. Despite the concentration of flavors, this retains an air of elegance, with a long finish. Drink now through 2014. 300 cases made. - Wine Spectator

Erna Schein Handcrafted Wines ‘Behrens Family Reserve’ 2005

Rated 94+ - The 2005 Behrens Family Reserve is a 400-case blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 23% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. A saturated ruby/purple color and blackberry as well as charcoal notes emerge from this full-bodied 2005. Low acidity, ripe tannin, and abundant texture and opulence are classic elements of Behrens wines. This fun, innovative offering is loaded with character, purity, and richness. - Robert Parker
