Gorgeous aromas of sage, blackberry and blueberry follow through to a full body, polished and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A pretty combination of subtle fruit and wood. Should come together beautifully. Drink in 2019. (Suckling)

The Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, is a strong effort from Joseph Phelps and possibly could turn out to be one of the best generic Napa bottlings they have made in many a year. There are 23,000 cases of this wine, which is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and the rest Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, almost all of it coming from their estate vineyards. The wine saw about 45% new oak (55% French, 45% American) and is opaque purple in color, with a classic Cabernet expression of tobacco leaf, blackcurrants, licorice and Christmas fruitcake. It is full-bodied, dense, opulent and concentrated, especially for the introductory Cabernet Sauvignon in the Joseph Phelps stable. No doubt, the fruit coming from 100% estate vineyards has certainly added quality to this offering. This should drink well for up to 20 or more years.

Opened this today for a taste and it was very tight when we first poured it. Has some dusty and tight green tannins but not unusual for a 2013 Napa cab at this price. Left some in the glass and went back after about an hour and the tannins had calmed down. It has some nice fruit but when it really did well was when I had a couple sips with my Pad Thai from lunch. Not normally what I would serve with Pad Thai but the food really softened the cab so it was much more approachable and you could get a better sense of where it was going to be in a year or so. Nice cab if you either serving it with some good protein (rib eye would have been perfect match) or if you have an hour or two to decant before serving.

There is little doubt about the fact that the most familiar red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, seen listed on bottles from more or less every single wine producing country across the globe. Part of the reason for this is the fact that Cabernet Sauvignon is a particularly hardy grape, resistant to both frost and rot, and can grow well in a number of climatic conditions so long as it receives enough sunlight and water.
