Professional Wine Reviews for Kay Brothers Shiraz Basket Pressed Syrah 2014

Rated 90 by Robert Parker
The 2014 Basket Pressed Shiraz opens with baked plums, crème de cassis and blackberry coulis notes with hints of sandalwood and spice box. Medium to full-bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, if offers lovely spice and warm berry notes that shout "open for business," while the velvety tannins and approachable acidity echo "come on in!" This wine is so consistently good, year in and year out. I love it.

Winery Kay Brothers

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

Region: Fleurieu

The Fleurieu Peninsula in southern Australia has been gaining a lot of international attention in recent years due to the wide range of excellent grape varietals which are currently flourishing there, and resulting in superb wines. The Mediterranean style climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly and fully, and express the many features of the excellent terroir which typifies the area. The variation in geological features of the peninsula is one of the key reasons why the wines from Fleurieu vary so greatly, and vintners in the region delight in experimenting with the micro-climates which make up the island's unique features. Today, the region mainly produces Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines of great character, although there are many varietals currently being grown there very successfully.

Country: Australia

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.
