The 2019 Réserve del Conte is a dark and burly beast, grumbling up with a bouquet of musky black berries, crushed ashen stone, cedar, alpine herbs and animal musk. This rushes the palate with silky textures offset by a bright acidity that adds an almost juicy, yet certainly high-energy feel, as tart red currants and sour cherries mingle, giving way to a coating of fine tannins. The Réserve del Conte finishes structured and long, yet maintains a fresh persona, as violet florals and mineral-tinged fruit slowly fade. This is a blend of 47% Merlot, 32% Lagrein and 21% Cabernet Sauvignon that goes through spontaneous fermentation and a gentle maceration for ten days before being refined in neutral oak of various sizes for another 12 months. Region: Trentino/Alto Adige

There are few wine regions in Italy which generate quite as much intrigue and excitement amongst wine lovers as that of Trentino-Alto Adige. Situated in the northernmost borders of the country, Trentino-Alto Adige is a wine region quite unlike any other in Italy. With a range of influences from Germany, Lombardy and Venezia, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige tend to be quite different from those found elsewhere in Italy, and are often considered to be the country's finest produce. The region is an alpine one, and the flavors of the Alps are often detected in Trentino-Alto Adige's finest white wines – all fresh, crystal waters and resiny aromas – whilst the red wines are generally deep and spicy, and perfect for a range of cuisines.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
