Varietal: Chenin Blanc
One of the most versatile white wine grape varietals in the world is the Chenin Blanc, a green skinned grape most closely associated with the still and sparkling wines of the Loire Valley, but which are cultivated in many countries across the globe and revered for their fine character and unique attributes. One of the key features of the Chenin Blanc grape is the fact that it is able to express the characteristics of the terroir it is grown on, making for highly interesting and complex white wines prized by those looking for something a little different. Their high acidity means they are perfect for producing a wide range of different wine styles, from flavorful still white wines to elegant crÃ©mants and sweet, viscous and unusual dessert wines.
New Zealand is a beautiful country with a fascinating wine culture, being one of the youngest New World countries on earth, and with a fervor for quality and unique wine making practices which have allowed it to carve a place in the world of wines. In the very east of New Zealand, we find the stunning region of Gisborne, which is widely regarded as being one of the country's finest regions for the production of high quality, Old World style white wines. The region was originally settled in the late 19th century, and by the early 20th century, vineyards were being planted, and characterful, flavorful grapes were being grown for the country's young but burgeoning wine industry. In Gisborne, the mild climate is ideal for the cultivation of Riesling and Chardonnay grapes, which make up most of the wines which leave the region.

One of the key attributes of New Zealand wines is their wonderful fruit-forward flavors, which make them a favorite with newcomers to wine, as they manage to be deliciously drinkable without posing many challenges. That isn't to say there is little complexity or interesting features to their wines, as one can easily discover through the fantastic range of wines available â€“ from smoky and mineral rich Sauvignon Blancs, to juicy and plummy Pinot Noirs and the beautiful Bordeaux style wines sourced from the excellent Auckland region. New Zealand wineries clearly have a dedication to quality alongside quantity, and such zeal and expertise is quickly helping them become established as world leaders in regards to both domestic sales and exported wines.
