Penner-Ash Wine Cellars

Oregon Wine, Willamette-Valley

About Penner-Ash Wine Cellars

Penner-Ash Wine Cellars Lynn Penner-Ash: Lynn started Penner-Ash Wine Cellars with husband Ron in 1998, carefully crafting small amounts of Pinot noir and Syrah, while she was still at Rex Hill. Their early success with the label caused them to dream of what they could create and in 2001 they began building the Penner-Ash brand full time.

Penner-Ash has achieved impressive growth, going from 125 cases of Pinot noir in 1998 to a projected 8,000 cases of Pinot noir and Syrah in 2007.

The Penner-Ash winery, completed in 2005, is nestled into a hillside overlooking the Chehalem Valley, the building seems to spring from the land itself and reflects our values, spirit and winemaking philosophy.

Penner-Ash Pinot Noirs and Syrahs are often described as "elegant and earthy, structured and thoughtful." These qualities come from a fundamental notion of transparency. Our 2008 Oregon Vioginer

is an abundance of custard with a hint of citrus, melon and red pear on the nose. Creamy oily texture of layered tropical fruit complements a sweet finish of Asian pear and apricot.

The make Their wines with a desire to break down barriers and to expose the winemaking mystery - to do away with pretense and bring them closer to the source. We have built that desire for transparency and closeness to nature into our winery building. Embraced by 80 acres of land, the winery is stepped into the hillside on three levels and positioned to take full advantage of the breathtaking and expansive views of the Chehalem Valley bounded by the Chehalem Mountains to the north and the Red Hills of Dundee to the south. The surrounding property is planted with 15 acres of Pinot noir grapes and 2005 was the vineyard's first harvest

HIGHLIGHT TWO VINEYARDS

Dussin Vineyard is our estate vineyard. We were able to use soil surveys to choose the clone placement in the vineyards. We chose the 114 on sedimentary soils looking for spiciness. The 115 on jory soils to provide us with up front juicy fruit and the Pommard for the mid-mouth feel and texture that is so important in Pinot noir. We have rounded out our 15 acres with Dijon 667 and 777 as each brings a lovely red and black fresh fruit note to wines.

Shea Vineyard has been called by many the Gran Cru Vineyard of Oregon. Our Pommard and 114 blocks consistently provide spice and structure to the wines. We enjoy working with vineyard manager Javier as he is very passionate about the vineyard. Our own property's close proximity to Shea Vineyard was a major factor in the decision to purchase, plant and build our vineyard and winery in the neighborhood. Shea Vineyard is owned by Dick and Deidra Shea.
