Napa Valley wines have always been about the artisanal touch. The beautiful Californian wine region attracts those interested in the craftsmanship of winemaking, bringing a touch of European class and finesse to the New World. It isn’t difficult to see the appeal - with land as good as that in the various Napa appellations, who wouldn’t want to get their hands dirty and add their personal stamp to their produce? One such artisanal winery in Napa is Round Pond Estate, a winery and farm in Rutherford. Owned by the MacDonnell family and now in its second generation of vintners, Round Pond Estate specializes in carefully crafted wines, olive oils, cured produce and providing visitors with unique and memorable winery experiences.
Round Pond Estate is a winery which is always moving with the times. With major updates happening across the winery in 2007, it features plenty of state of the art equipment with which to make its characterful and expressive wines. While the kit may be modern, the winemaking techniques stay traditional and artisanal, with plenty of inspiration being taken from southern France and Italy in the way the grapes are handled and processed. The estate now covers over 350 acres of prime vine growing land in the heart of the Napa Valley, as well as five acres of organic vegetable gardens, and twelve acres of olive groves, used to produce the oil which is extracted on site.
The MacDonnell family aim for maximum expression of their pristine Napa terroir in their wines, and they use a variety of low-intervention methods to make sure this happens. The winery is focused on key Napa varietals, like Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but they also produce a beautiful set of Nebbiolo wines, and both a white and red blend which have gained plenty of praise over recent vintages.
