Winery Tablelands

Varietal: Pinot Gris

The Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape varietal is now one of the most widely grown vines in the world, due to the surge in popularity of Pinot Grigio wines over the past twenty years or so. These grayish-blue fruits, which hang in their distinctively conical bunches, are responsible for a very broad range of wines famous for their variety of color tones and flavors Pinot Grigio varietal grapes are highly influenced by terroir, climate and particularly the skill and expertise of the vintners who process them. As such, there are full bodied, amber colored wines made from this grape, and there are equally delicious yet far leaner, paler, lighter bodied and crisp white wines made from the same species in other parts of the world.

Region: Hawkes Bay

The beautiful and airy northern New Zealand region of Hawkes Bay has been an important spiritual home for the country's wine industry for over a hundred and fifty years now. Indeed, Hawkes Bay is widely regarded as the oldest of New Zealand's wine regions, which, in a relatively young country such as New Zealand, makes it something quite special and has allowed the region to develop its own style and identity. Hawkes Bay today produces a wide range of wines, made from many different grape varietals. However, it is the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines of the region which have gained the most recognition and praise over recent decades, alongside the fact that the region's dessert wines are now considered amongst the finest in the New World.

Country: New Zealand

New Zealand is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and ecologically diverse countries in the world, and the wines which are produced there are a fine representation of this diversity and overall quality. With beautifully long and warm summers, a brisk oceanic climate and mile upon mile of gently sloping mountainsides, the vineyards which have sprung up there over the past century have brought about truly fantastic results, with wine now contributing a considerable amount to the economy of the country. In recent years, New Zealand wines have won some of the most prestigious awards available in the wine world, with most of the lauded wineries coming from the Auckland region, where there has been considerable effort to replicate the finest wines of the Bordeaux region of France. The Bordeaux grape varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec) all flourish in the mineral rich soil of the region, and the results have been outstanding, marking New Zealand a strong contender for finest New World wine country.
