Tuscany is a fascinating place for wine. With over two thousand years of glorious viticultural history, and a modern wine scene which is bursting with renewed energy and passion, it is home to some of Italy’s finest wines, and many of the country’s boldest and most interesting wineries. On the Tuscan coast, we find the pretty village of Bolgheri, which was awarded DOC status in the mid twentieth century because of the extremely high quality of the vineyards which were planted there. Bolgheri is home to Tenuta Guado al Tasso, one of the region’s most distinguished and widely appreciated wineries, and which produces some of the area’s best rose and Super Tuscan style wines.

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is overseen by the charismatic Piero Antonini, a winemaker who is appreciated in Italy as being a true revolutionary in his craft and a master of wonderful, modern Tuscan wine. His flagship wine, Tignanello, caused serious ripples in the Tuscan wine scene in 1971, due to the fact that he boldly followed his instincts and blended a natively grown Sangiovese wine with a French Cabernet Sauvignon - something which defied the strong traditions of the region, but which resulted in a truly characterful and fascinating wine. Ever since, Antonini has been synonymous with the Super Tuscan’s bold and innovative spirit, and he brings this approach to Tenuta Guado al Tasso, a newer project of his.

Tenuta Guado al Tasso is made up of 300 hectares of prime Bolgheri vineyards, which benefit from the widely varied soils found there. In typical Antonini style, the vineyards of Tenuta Guado al Tasso are planted with a range of local Italian grapes, and several French varietals. Vermentino and Sangiovese sit side by side with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, and the output of Tenuta Guado al Tasso is just as exciting and revolutionary as it always has been - with quality and excellence coming before tradition and following all the rules.
