The 2014 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard is pretty, floral and quite aromatic. Midweight and gracious, the 2014 is delicate and light on its feet. Sweet red and bluish hued fruits linger in a soft, nuanced Zinfandel that will drink well upon release. (Galloni)

Playing it closer to the vest, but still impressive is the 2014 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard, which comes from sandy soils as well as vines planted between 1890 and 1930 in Contra Costa County. This is another heady Zinfandel (15.5% alcohol) that exhibits a nice, dark ruby color and loamy soil undertones intermixed with blueberry, strawberry and cherry. It seems to be slightly more reserved and tighter, but spicy and rich. This seems like a candidate to improve for another several years and drink beautifully for another 7-8.

Varietal: Zinfandel

The mild tannins and fresh, sweet fruit flavors of Zinfandel grapes and the wines they produce have made them a firm favorite around the world. For people looking for wine which carries simple but pleasant, uncomplicated but refreshing flavors and aromas, Zinfandel is ideal. As such, it has become a widely planted grape across the New World, despite it having origins in southern Europe. These thin-skinned grapes grow in large, tight bunches are surprisingly delicate and sensitive to climatic conditions – if they get too hot, they are likely to shrivel on the vine, and being a tightly packed bunch, Zinfandel grapes are also prone to rot and decay. However, their mild flavor and sugar-rich juices offer vintners an opportunity to show off their skill and expertise, and are a fantastic grape for demonstrating the features of the terroir they are grown on in the bottle.

Since the 18th century, California has been a hugely important and influential wine region, acting as a trailblazer for other New World wine regions and utilizing an important blend of traditional and contemporary practices, methods and techniques relating to their wine production. Split into four key areas – the North Coast, the Central Coast, the South Coast and the Central Valley – Californian wineries make the most of their ideal climate and rich variety of terrains in order to produce a fascinating range of wines made with a long list of different fine grape varietals. Today, the state has almost half a million acres under vine, and is one of the world's largest wine exporters, with Californian wines being drunk and enjoyed all across the globe.

The first European settlers to consider growing grapevines in the United States must have been delighted when they discovered the now famous wine regions within California, Oregon and elsewhere. Not even in the Old World are there such fertile valleys, made ideal for vine cultivation by the blazing sunshine, long, hot summers and oceanic breezes. As such, it comes as little surprise that today more than eighty-nine percent of United States wines are grown in the valleys and on the mountainsides of California, where arguably some of the finest produce in the world is found. However, American wine does not begin and end with California, and due to the vast size of the country and the incredible range of terrains and climates found within the United States, there is probably no other country on earth which produces such a massive diversity of wines. From ice wines in the northern states, to sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fortified wines, reds, whites, rosés and more, the United States has endless surprises in store for lovers of New World wines.

Appellation: Central Coast

When it comes to New World wines, there are few regions quite as impressive or important as California. Running down the Pacific coast of the state, we find the long and narrow Central Coast region, a huge stretch of land which covers over two hundred and fifty miles, and features of 90,000 acres of vineyards, owned by dozens of wineries. The wineries of Central Coast are keen to show the world just how good their terroir can be for viticulture, and with the help of plenty of modern techniques and state of the art wine-making methods, they are busily making superb wines from the French and Italian grapes which thrive there. By far the most important grapes of the region are the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals which flourish under the hot sunshine, but dozens of varietals grow very well in Central Coast, making this a varied and fascinating region to explore.
