Rich dark classic claret in colour, a sweetness to the palate and the layers and complexity on this are excellent. On aromas alone this displays real class and complexity. Cassis and bilberry notes are clear, we are still in primary fruit territory, but they are beginning to stretch out and get to good drinkability. It has wonderful precision across the palate, intense and complex but far from a monster, this has refinement and a gorgeous juicy drinkability. Barrel sample. Structure is what this wine is all about. The tannins arch over the fine fruit potential. There are tobacco, perfume and an enticing smoky character.

Raspberry, wet-earth, stone and iodine character here. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fine, linear finish. A little austere at the moment, but attractive. Drink now or hold.

There's attractive blackberry and light vanilla, with a hint of licorice. Full-bodied, with a caressing texture, very pretty fruit and notes of chocolate and licorice. Best from 2014 through 2018.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London.The 2006 Domaine de Chevalier has smudged red plum, bergamot and stewed black tea scents on the nose - quite fragrant if just missing some delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with taut, quite firm tannin. Dark and broody, this is a surprisingly introspective Domaine de Chevalier with a grippy, quite assertive finish. This is a satisfying wine from Olivier Bernard, though at the moment you get the feeling that somebody has said something to this 2006 that has put it into a bad mood. I find there is more finesse on other recent vintage,s but you never know with Domaine de Chevalier because at any given moment it can blossom. Tasted January 2016.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

Bordeaux red wines are widely regarded as being the finest red wines produced anywhere in the world, regularly topping awards lists and generally being amongst the most sought after and collectable bottles available. The secret to their success and their particularly memorable and refined characteristics is the fact that Bordeaux red wines are made from a blend of grape varietals, most commonly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, helped by a touch of Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc. The other two key Bordeaux grape varietals which are also used in the blend of many of these excellent wines are Malbec and Carménere, although it is becoming less common to see these in use today. The art of blending primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varietals is something which has been much imitated around the world, as it produces a wonderfully balanced, rounded yet massively complex and flavorful wine, ideal for oak aging The acid and tannin levels in each of these grape varietals is balanced and tempered by the blend, and generations of expertise has gone into the careful selection and cultivation of such quality grapes.
