The 2016 Chardonnay Odem Organic (Yarden) was aged for seven months in 70% new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. This is always pretty well priced and very correct. A restrained wine, it has elegance in the mid-palate and handles the wood very well. It's not terribly expressive, but it has freshness and focus. I especially appreciated the freshness. Nothing makes it stand out, but it is beautifully balanced. The price is reasonable and it checks all the boxes. I'd drink this on the younger side, but it should hold nicely for a few years, at the least. The fresh feel may help preserve it better than anticipated, in fact, but let's be conservative in that regard. In the meanwhile, this precise Chardonnay is a nice value. There were 2,300 cases produced from Golan Heights' vines at around 4,000 feet in altitude.

Varietal: Chardonnay

Despite having its origins in western France, Chardonnay's immense popularity and flexibility quickly meant that before long, there wasn't a wine producing country in the world which wasn't investing in this fascinating and versatile grape varietal. Today, Chardonnays manage to win fine wine competitions and satisfy supermarket shoppers simultaneously, due to the fact that this grape varietal can take on many characteristics and features of where it is grown and how it is handled. Indeed, this green skinned grape is renowned for not having so much unique flavor within the fruit, but is very sensitive to the features of the terroir it is grown in, as well as to aging As such, it isn't unusual to find bottles of single variety Chardonnay wine described as holding notes of white stone, mountain waters, or other such geological features alongside the more predictable fruit descriptions This makes Chardonnay grape varietal wines an exciting world to delve into – full of surprises, full of delights.

Region: Galilee

There are few regions in the world which are as renowned for their historical and cultural importance as Galilee. However, as a wine region, this area of Israel remains relatively undiscovered by much of the western world. As one might expect, Galilee is an important producer of kosher wines, with the vast majority of the produce made there carefully overseen by religious specialists ensuring that purity laws are observed. The result of this is a reasonably large industry focusing on Jewish communities around the world, who wish to enjoy classic, Old World style wines packed full of fascinating flavors and aromas. Galilee's mineral rich and volcanic soils allow vintners in the area to experiment with a wide range of grape varietals, and dozens of popular imported French varietals flourish well there.

Country: Israel

Since biblical times, Israel has been an important production center for wine, and continues to be so to this day. All over Israel, the Mediterranean climate the country enjoys ensures that grapes grow to full ripeness, and the vineyards are helped considerably by the mineral rich limestone soils which typify the geology of the wine regions. Interestingly, in Israel, up to fifteen percent of all wine production today is used for sacramental purposes, and the vast majority of the wines produced there are made in accordance to Jewish kosher laws. Israel is split into five major wine producing regions; Galil, The Judean Hills, Shimshon, The Negev, and the Sharon Plain, and in recent years the wine industry of Israel has brought over twenty five million dollars per annum to the Israeli economy.
