When it comes to fine red wines, the whole world generally looks to Bordeaux for inspiration. However, after a relatively poor year in 2011, the same world was curious about what would happen in 2012, with many predicting similar misfortune. Happily, 2012 was by no means a bad year in this region of France, with some truly outstanding wines coming out amid a lot of passable ones. The extremely late season certainly benefited the Merlot varietal the most, with Cabernet Sauvignon taking something of a back seat for the 2012 Bordeaux vintage. As such, the soft, plummy and cassis character of Bordeaux Merlot was very much in front, apart from in those larger wineries where the teams of vintners could help their Cabernet Sauvignon grapes along in the tricky climate of this year.
2012 Bordeaux red blends are typified by fantastic colour, balanced tannins and plenty of strong, upfront fruit flavors. They have been relatively low on acidity and alcohol level, and as such are likely to be drunk on release rather than aged any further in cellars - if you’re looking for a reliable, drinkable and straightforward set of Bordeaux red wines, then 2012 is a great vintage to start with.
The real winners of 2012 Bordeaux were the white wines, which had a fantastic year and proved just how exciting this region can be for fine, white varietals. The whites of 2012 Bordeaux are livelier and more zesty than those in recent years, and many wineries have been softer on the oak, meaning more flexible and fruitier white wines than we’ve come to expect.
