Aromas of cassis, black fruit, blackberry leaves, mint chocolate, iodine and sandalwood. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins. Structured, dense and focused. Try in 2026.

The 2019 Château Brown has a mélange of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of espresso and tobacco emerging with time. Perhaps I was anticipating a little more complexity given the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied and quite saline, with a peppery opening, good tension, fine grip and decent length on the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will up its game, as this certainly has potential.

Open and forward in feel, featuring a wave of warmed cassis, steeped plum and blackberry notes, with licorice and tar accents. Delivers a nice tug of earth on the finish, as the fruit keeps pace. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. 7,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.
Winery
Difficult weather conditions throughout the season, with frosts in the spring. Compensated by excellent weather in the final months, allowing us to harvest the grapes relatively late. A classic Brown vintage, with a strong majority of Cabernet Sauvignon and rich flavours typical of our gravel terroir.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux method of blending quality grape varietals is something which has long been imitated and envied around the world. Whilst there are six Bordeaux grape varietals allowed for the production of red wine in this region of France – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere – the most common and widely used combination involves a careful blend of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, usually with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to boost the overall flavor and balance things out. This process accentuates the finer points of all these varietals, and takes the astringency of one type whilst rounding it out and mellowing it with the light tannins and fleshiness of another. The results are rarely short of spectacular, and are perfect for oak aging, where the flavorful magic of Bordeaux wine making can really take place, and the complex aromas and characteristics can truly come forward.
