Deep, dark and almost animalistic in nature, the 1997 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni boasts a rich ruby hue in the glass without any bricking at the rim. Balsamic spice, dried black cherries, leather, minty herbs and hints of mocha form its beguiling bouquet. Its textures are velvety-smooth, yet the wine is surprisingly lifted with tart berries and sweet inner herbal tones, as silty tannins slowly saturate toward the close. While still lightly structured, which I believe the 1997 always will be, the finale remains completely pleasurable and long, with a mentholated freshness and a bitter hint of espresso that lingers. ... Superb Sagrantino. Wonderful chocolate, spice and currant aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long, rich finish. Best after 2003. 2,500 cases made.
Winery
With the spirit of the challenge but also with the love and imagination of those who pursue a dream, this wine has been made that wants to act like the beyond of Sagrantino. Sagrantino 25 Anni was born from the exciting research experience and from the special selection of Sagrantino grapes. Produced for the first time with the 1993 vintage to celebrate the company's 25 ° anniversary, it has since retained this name together with the character, power and elegance that distinguish it. AROMA: Surprising complexity ranging from blackberry jam to rose, from nutmeg to pepper, from pine resin to mint, from clove to cocoa. TASTE: Soft, persuasive, which never ends. The freshness is inviting, the tannin is elegant and composed.

Region: Umbria

The beautiful central Italian region of Umbria may well be a fraction of the size of neighboring Tuscany, but still manages to impress and surprise the international wine community with their outstanding produce and the volume they make it in, with the region turning out over twenty five million gallons of wine per year. However, Umbrian wine makers have been exceptionally keen to emphasize the fact that they are primarily concerned with creating quality, characterful and unique Italian wines, often made from blends of native varietals, with imported Bordeaux grapes. In particular, the aged white wines of Umbria, made from Chardonnay and Grechetto grapes, have proven to be a huge success internationally, demonstrating how this particular region is ready to blend traditional practices with innovation and the pursuit of perfection when it comes to making wines.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
