Pouring from the bottle with a light ruby color, the Albino Rocca 2018 Barbaresco Cottà shows dried cherry, cassis and lots of blue flower or summer lavender. This is a classic and neatly contained expression of cool-vintage Nebbiolo. The bouquet is fluid but also compact, and you can look forward to an interesting aromatic evolution to come as this wine continues along its aging path. Only 2,000 bottles were released.

A tight weave of plum, cherry, tar and underbrush flavors and burly tannins marks this solidly-built red. The fruit is there, but submerged for now, while the finish leaves a dusting of tannins. Best from 2025 through 2038. 150 cases made, 20 cases imported.
Winery
The small vineyard of Cottà located in the municipality of Neive was purchased by family in the 1970’s. It was then vinified separately for the first time in 2015, and is considered another historic soul of the Barbaresco area. This vineyard is where the Tortonian imprint from the land gives complex and long lived wines.

The name 'Nebbiolo' means 'fog' in Italian, and there is some debate as to the origin of this unusual name. However, many people claim it has something to do with the milky white dust which covers these dark, round grapes as they begin to reach maturity. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
