Rated 96 by James Halliday
Yields were ridiculously low in 2020, but Henk Laing's field blend of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris always seems to cope with what the vintage throws at it. Exotic, perfumed and intense, with nectarine and passion fruit flavours, old vine concentration, subtle tannins and an undertow of acidity. 2023-28 (Tim Atkin) ... More details

green grapes

Varietal: Semillon

The grapes of the Semillon vine have been grown throughout Europe and the New World in abundance over the past three hundred years, and were at one point considered to be the most widely planted grape in the world. The reason for this is probably due to the fact that in the New World, wineries were looking to set up vineyards using grapes which grow well in a range of conditions, produce high yields and have a strong resistance to disease – things which Semillon is renowned for. The grapes themselves are usually golden in color, taking on their pink blush only when ripened in particularly warm climates. They produce wines of many different types, and are equally fine for use in dry wines as well as sweeter varieties.

Country: South Africa

Perhaps the most famous and well respected of all the wine regions in South Africa is that of Constantia, which holds many of the oldest and most traditional wineries in the country. Here, the temperate climate receives the Atlantic winds which cool the vineyards, and the fertile soil allows the grapes to grow to full ripeness, resulting in highly flavorful wines which are enjoyed around the world. Whilst Sauvignon Blanc varietals make up the most widely exported wines of this region, the rest of the country produces a huge and impressive range of wines, made up from varietals native to many different European countries. From excellent Champagne style sparkling wines, to aromatic fortified examples, fruity reds and refreshing whites, South Africa continues to impress and surprise, with modern techniques and technologies leading the way and producing exceptional results.
