The beautiful sub-region of Cotes de Beaune in France’s Burgundy is one which has always been associated with the finest quality red and white wines. A combination of traditional, time-honored techniques, a set of winemakers with a true reverence for their craft and land, and pristine terroir has come together over the centuries to result in one of the world’s most famous and respected wine cultures. In the heart of Cotes de Beaune, we find the grand estate of Chateau de la Maltroye, a winery which is widely regarded as one of the best in the area, capable of producing wines which truly express the land they use, and beautifully represent Cotes de Beaune as a whole.
The past century in Cotes de Beaune was something of a chequered one, with political upheaval, war, disease and unreliable international trade making things difficult at times. Amazingly, when the Cournut family purchased Chateau de la Maltroye in 1940, the six and a half acre set of vineyards which ran behind the chateau had gone to seed, and had been converted into a large vegetable garden. In the early twentieth century, the Burgundy wine business was on its knees, and there was no profit in making new plantings and maintaining suffering wineries. However, times change, and thankfully today the same plot of land makes up the Maltroye premier cru holding, a cru which results in utterly beautiful wines which command a high price at auction, and which are highly sought after due to their complexity and class.
The cru is split almost fifty fifty between the two classic grape varietals of Burgundy - Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wine production of the chateau is today overseen by the Cournut family, and in particular by Jean-Pierre Cournut - a man who is widely regarded as one of the most talent viticulturalists of his generation. The wines which come out of Chateau de la Maltroye are vibrant, beautifully balanced, and benefitting from the fine oak barrels in which they are matured.
