Sun-baked garrigue and smoky notes of iron and earth accent intensely ripe black cherry and cassis in this wine. Made from 100% Syrah, it’s a hulking powerhouse of black-fruit flavors but finessed by firm acidity and fine, integrated tannins. Stunning already it should improve through 2036 and hold further. (Cellar Selection)

Varietal

Syrah

Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. It is now one of the planet's most widely grown grapes, and is a favorite with wineries as a result of its robustness and versatility. It isn't easy to identify many characteristics of this particular varietal, due to the fact that it is highly versatile and shows significant differences in flavor and character depending on the terroir it is grown in, and the climatic conditions of the region. However, Syrah is most widely associated with full bodied, strong and loud red wines, packed full of fruity and spicy flavors, held in a beautifully deep red liquid.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Cote Rotie

Côte-Rôtie, an esteemed appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley of France, stands as a beacon of Syrah excellence. What makes Côte-Rôtie unique is its dramatic topography, where steep terraced vineyards cling to the slopes of the Rhône River. The region's continental climate, combined with granite soils and ample sun exposure, contributes to the exceptional ripening of Syrah grapes, resulting in wines of unparalleled aromatic complexity and structure. Côte-Rôtie wines are characterized by their signature flavors of dark fruits, violets, and a distinctive smokiness. The appellation allows the co-fermentation of Syrah with a small percentage of Viognier, adding floral and aromatic dimensions to the wines. Producers like Guigal and Jamet exemplify Côte-Rôtie's commitment to tradition, crafting wines that showcase the synergy between terroir and grape variety. Exploring Côte-Rôtie offers a profound encounter with the pinnacle of Syrah craftsmanship, where the Rhône's hillsides give birth to wines of sublime beauty and complexity.

Alluring, with warm fruitcake and black tea aromatics leading off for a lush and warm core of crushed plum, cherry reduction and blackberry pate de fruit flavors. Despite the showy fruit detail, there's a solid iron underpinning, with pretty floral notes and bright energy throughout. Best from 2023 through 2038. 300 cases made, 188 cases imported.

Unlike most vintages (which require cellaring), the 2016 Cote Rotie La Landonne is already drinking well. It is perfumed and floral, with violets, herbs, pepper and rosemary notes coming together in a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors that are backed by layers of silky-textured raspberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's creamy and lush on the palate, with a long, delicate finish.

Bright purple. Powerful cherry, cassis, potpourri, exotic spice and olive qualities on the highly perfumed, complex nose. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering impressively concentrated black and blue fruit preserve, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that unfold steadily with aeration. In a powerful but energetic style and quite primary now. Aeration brings up smoky bacon and floral pastille qualities that carry through the strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves behind sweet dark and floral notes.

The first vintage of this wine was in 1997. It has resonant Côte-Rôtie aromatics; sylvan, resinous, and more vinous than many. It is medium to full-bodied, with generous, concentrated, sweetly-ripe fruit, very fine tannins and a fine seam of minerality that extends into the long, savoury finish. A serious wine this, very well balanced with unmistakable class from this distinguished site. Well-judged use of oak, this is harmonious already. Impressive.

The 2016 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is another forward, charming, balanced beauty. Blackberries, violets, camphor, and hints of acacia flowers all emerge from this impressively balanced Côte Rôtie. As with the 2017, there's a forward, approachable style here, but it's seamless, elegant, and long. Both these wines are much more elegant and forward than previous vintages.

Winery Notes

The wine's deep colour is underscored by plummy hues. A complex nose shows deep, fruity aromas with hints of liquorice and roasted coffee. Endowed with a dense and silky tannic structure, this is a full, fleshy wine that provides an ample and generous palate. Its lasting finish speaks of considerable ageing potential.
