Jacques Prieur’s Échézeaux is located in Les Champs Traversins, whose vines run from north to south across the slope at the bottom of the Combe d’Orveaux. The coolness of the site is well suited to the 2017 vintage and has produced a wine that’s sappy and focussed, with good ageing potential, plenty of colour and intense plum and bramble fruit. Drinking Window 2022 – 2030.

A supple, fluid red, this offers cherry, raspberry, floral and spice flavors matched to a bracing structure. The acidity is more prominent than the tannins, leaving a long, mouthwatering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2046. 15 cases imported.

An overtly spicy nose features notes of Asian-style tea, sandalwood, cassis and lovely floral hints. The caressing yet entirely serious medium weight plus flavors possess good density for the vintage, all wrapped in a surprisingly powerful and lengthy finish.

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed. It has a slightly conservative bouquet with pure dark cherry and cranberry aromas, but does not quite deliver the nuance and complexity of the best wines from this vineyard in 2017. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, but very strict and stoic, tight-lipped towards the finish. Hopefully this will gain more personality once it is in bottle.

Winery Notes

Classical ruby red. Subtle with delicate spicy and fruity (vanilla, cherry) and slightly mentholated notes. The palate is delicious and smooth. Tasty fruity texture evolving into spicy and menthol notes. Fine, fresh and subtle tannins.
