The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru is more straightlaced than François Carillon’s Les Perrières. It does not quite have the complexity, though it delivers attractive, peppermint-tinged citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with a lovely texture that oddly reminds me of a Corton-Charlemagne. Fine acidity, fresh with a sapid finish—such is the calibre of the palate that I suspect the aromatics are simply in a closed phase of its evolution. So, cellar it for three to four years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay.
