Varietal Muscat

One of the most widely grown and easily recognized wine grape varietals in the world is the Muscat, an ancient grape with an exceptional amount of versatility. For centuries, Muscat varietal grapes have been used all over Europe for the production of wonderfully fruity wines of many different shades and colors, which, with their strong 'grapey' flavor have come to be known as a quintessential fine wine grape. Their relatively high acidity also means they are ideal for the production of sparkling wines, and the fizzy Muscat wines of Italy are widely agreed to be amongst the best in the world. In more recent years, New World countries have shown a huge amount of flair when it comes to the Muscat grape, and have had plenty of success in allowing its natural and vibrant character to come through in the bottle.

Country Australia

Whilst most of Australia consists of arid deserts and dense bushland, the oceanic coasts to the south of the country have a terrain and climate ideal for vine cultivation and wine production. It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.

Region Victoria

The Australian region of Victoria is the country's most historically significant wine region, with vine cultivation and wine production going on there since the mid 19th century. In those times, Victoria produced over half of all Australia's wines. However, today, despite having a huge number of wineries, Victoria has begun to focus on quality over quantity – many of the six hundred wineries based in this region produce wines made from lesser known grape varietals, often producing fascinating wines full of character, but made from vines with far lower yields and a considerably smaller audience. Today, most of the viticulture in Victoria takes place near the cool, coastal region around Melbourne. However, recent years have seen irrigation projects help wine makers grow vines in the more arid parts of the region, with a wide range of grapes now being grown.

Appellation Rutherglen

WE 92pts

Wine Enthusiast

Yalumba's Muscat includes some lots from outside Rutherglen, but it's still an excellent example of fortified Muscat, featuring hints of caramelized cherries and a sweet, complex mélange of caramel, toffee and chocolate balanced by citrusy freshness. (Editor's Choice)

DC 92pts

Decanter

Like Rutherglen Muscat, shrivelled and partially raisined berries are fermented briefly on skins, then fortified. Fruit is sourced from red and black (as well as Rutherglen’s brown) Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains mutations. Ageing in hogsheads and barriques dials up the richness (360g/l residual sugar), unleashing bourbon and marzipan-like nutty notes to its boozy Christmas pudding and medjool date flavour. Moreish, not mawkish, with savoury chicory coffee notes and deftly balanced acidity.

Winery Notes

Yalumba first began making wines at the Angaston winery more than 167 years ago, and the production of fortified wines has long been part of that history. Today, Yalumba maintains its reputation for premium quality fortified wines by occasionally releasing very small parcels of show reserve stocks. Luscious and intense, this gloriously indulgent dessert wine is made from Muscat grapes that are picked late for sweetness and aged in barrels for up to 10 years.
