The 2018 Meursault Genevrières ler Cru is a wine that Véronique Drouhin is convinced will age for many years, comparing it to the 2012. It has a vibrant, fresh, effervescent bouquet with walnut and smoke aromas billowing from the glass. The very well-balanced palate delivers pitch-perfect acidity, just the right amount of salinity and impressive focus and nervosité on the finish. This comes highly recommended.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Véronique Drouhin and her team have produced some very impressive whites in 2018, typified by the quality of this 25% new oak-aged Meursault Premier Cru from a single parcel at the northern end of the appellation. Cinnamon and oatmeal aromas segue into a palate that combines elements of baking spices, pear and fresh lemons and subtle oak.

Winery Notes

Meursault Premier Cru Genevrières reveals a nice pale yellow colour. The nose, concentrated and elegant, is reminiscent of almond, warm bread just out of the oven, then, fine spice and finally grilled dried fruit. The mouth, both ample and generous, develops aromas of vanilla mingling with citrus notes. Very long aftertaste.
